Abstract: Ján Kvačala Sr. came to work as a teacher in the Lower Land, in Báčský Petrovec from his native Beckov. He married Terézia Godrová and they had five children: Adelheid Karolína, Karol Drahotín, Ján Jr., Ľudmila and Lujza. Ján Kvačala Sr. made sure that his children received an education, especially his sons, who had to go to study in Sarvaš, Prešpork and finally at German universities. His father maintained a lively correspondence with them, which shows us life both in Báčský Petrovec and in the places of their study and work. Ján Kvačala Sr. wrote a total of 14 documents himself (including nine letters, four correspondence notes and one note for a package). Sometimes he did not even sign the correspondence. From Ján Kvačala Jr. We have two letters from mid‑April 1880 from Sopron and from June 23, 1880 addressed to Ján Kvačal Sr. If Ján Kvačal Sr. wrote the letters with his wife, or if the wife was attributed, then 65 documents have been preserved (including 57 letters and eight correspondence cards). In the article we present a selection, i.e. 15 letters. Using extensive commentary on the letters, we explain the realities and milieu in which the Kvačals lived.
