Abstract: The article analyzes the life of the teacher Ján Kvačala Sr. and his son Ján Kvačala Jr., a comeniologist and church historian, based on their mutual correspondence, which has not been processed so far. The nationalist and conservative Lutheran Ján Kvačala Sr. came to Báčský Petrovec from his native Beckov and started a family here. After his studies at home, his son Ján continued his education in Šopron, Prešpork and at the University of Leipzig. The lively correspondence shows the reader the joys and problems of the Slovaks in Báčský Petrovec and at the same time the world of the gymnasium in Šopron, Prešpork and the University of Leipzig. Ján Kvačala Sr. wrote to his son not only about family events, interesting things in Báčský Petrovec and the surrounding area, but also about famous personalities and problems in the church congregation. Ján Kvačala Jr. He described not only his studies, but also the teaching staff, e.g. his father‘s friend Štefan Koreň from Šoproň, Magyarization, attacks against the Pan-Slavs, etc. We present only part of the correspondence with the family, much information is provided by letters to Ján Kvačal Jr. from his older brother, the theologian Karel, and from his sisters Lujza, Ľudmila and Zuzana.
