Abstract: The study deals with the formation and characteristics of the press organ of the New Slovak School, namely the periodical Slovenské noviny, which emerged in the second half of the nineteenth century as an alternative to the conservative centre in Turčiansky Svätý Martin. The author examines the development of Slovak political thought within the broader context of the national movement, particularly through the prism of the disputes between the Old and New Schools. The study analyzes the ideological foundations of the New School’s representatives, their relationship to Hungary, and their rejection of Austrian centralism, while also focusing on the figure of Ján Palárik as a key representative of the liberal current. In conclusion, attention is directed toward the significance of the first generation of Slovak intellectuals in Budapest, their efforts to establish an independent political platform, and the role of the press as a tool for institutionalizing and disseminating national and political ideas within the modernizing Habsburg monarchy.
