Abstract: The study deals with Konštantín Čulen’s work as historian during the First Czechoslovak republic. Čulen (1904 – 1964) was one of the most influential Slovak historians, although he never studied history professionally. We introduced him as a historian of the political and cultural history of the second half of the Slovak 19th. century and also as a first historian of American Slovaks. We outlined his journalistic beginnings in radio and newspapers, but the main accent is focused on his book production in the first phase of his public activity, during interwar years 1932 – 1938. In addition to the content of the books, we brought up the circumstances under which they were created, the reactions of critics and their pioneering importance and value for Slovak historical science.
