Abstract: František Hrušovský was one of the important representatives of Matica Slovenská in the first half of the 20th century, who contributed to the development of science within the institution. At that time, Matica Slovenská scientific branches replaced the missing Academy of Sciences and laid the foundations of many scientific disciplines – linguistics, ethnography, history, literary history and natural sciences. František Hrušovský, the first secretary of scientific branches in the years 1937-1945, also deserves credit for this. He worked in Matica Slovenská as a member of its committee, member and clerk of the History Branch, editor of the historical part of Sborník Matice slovenskej (1935-1941) and Historický sborník (1943-1944), as well as chairman of the Local Branch Office in Kláštor pod Znievom (1933-1940). As the secretary of scientific branches, Hrušovský primarily managed them organizationally, reviewed and edited scientific manuscripts. He promoted the need for the establishment of the Slovak National Library and the Slovak Bibliographic Society, and he also advocated the creation of Matica’s independent workplaces – the Bibliographic Institute and the Literary Archive.
