Abstract: The article analyzes the most important topics of medieval history that Richard Marsina dealt with. His research and historical work, R. Marsina directed in the intentions of his teacher Daniel Rapant to confirm the legitimacy of the existence of Slovak history. R. Marsina’s main focus was the history of settlements – to scientifically map the subject of research of Slovak history – the Slovak people. His second focal point was the history of towns. The article focuses on the terminological problem of the word “town”, how the term “town” was perceived by R. Marsina, and how he used it in his works. The third significant area that R. Marsina dealt with was the editions of sources. Every advanced historiography needs its source editions, the selection of which must be based on the current needs of historical science. In this article the emphasis is mainly on the early editing works by R. Marsina and on the methodology source of editing medieval sources. The last topic dealt with are the syntheses of Slovak history. The contribution traces how R. Marsina got to writing his first synthetic text on medieval Slovak history and what other activities he carried out in the field of drafting syntheses of Slovak history. The factual knowledge drawn from the published texts by R. Marsina and from archival documents is supplemented by Marsina’s personal memories, which he shared with the author of the article.
