Abstract: After 1948, the possibilities of Slovak historians and archivists to travel to Italy and carry out their scientific activities there were severely limited for political reasons. In the 1950s, research trips or trips to present scientific results to Italian and other foreign colleagues were almost nonexistent. The possibilities opened up to a limited extent in the 1960s and this situation persisted until 1989. They were implemented in two main directions. The first was the activities of the scientific staff of the Historical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, which also included research in the Secret Vatican Archives. The second line was related to the activities of Slovak archivists dealing with the inventory and collection of foreign Slovak language-related and/or Slovakia culture-related archival documents. It is these two essential areas that this article is devoted to. A considerable amount of work was carried out in both lines of travels to Italy, even under difficult conditions, which could be followed up after the fall of the regime in 1989.
