Abstract: The study deals with the creation and functioning of the militia as a kind of army in the Army of the Slovak Republic in 1995–2002. The first political proposals for the creation of a militia after 1989 appeared in Slovakia in 1991 during the existence of the Czecho-Slovak state. The militia, however, was not to be a part of the army, but an independent armed service. That is why this proposal failed. After the establishment of the Slovak Republic in 1993, the command of the Slovak army returned to the idea of militia. In the new conditions, it was necessary to defend Slovakia from all directions, and the regular army was not large enough for such a task. A militia was therefore established in 1995. Organizational elements of six militia brigades and the militia training centre in Žilina were created. This training centre was operational until 2001 and was the longest existing militia unit. In 2000, the Militia Command in Topoľčany and four mobilization bases, which were to build 10 infantry brigades for militia in case of mobilization, were created. It was a new concept of militia, different from the 1995 concept. However, these units including the entire militia were abolished as soon as 2002.
