Abstract: The presented paper describes the situation in populating Turiec region towards the end of the Middle Ages and analyzes the selection of “portal” registries from the 16th century. These are one of the main sources of information on population and settlement growth developments in the area. Based on the interpretation of these, the study attempts to inform about the population and the size of Turiec settlements in the early modern era. The number of settlements and their distribution within Turiec County was already relatively stable in the period under review; the number of homesteads that paid the so-called “portal” (homestead gate) tax was constantly changing. However, in addition to these data, the portal registries also offer other interesting information that the study in question notices. For example, these are the names of the landowners to whom the individual villages belonged, the number of deprived inhabitants, rarely also their names, different occupations of subjects, or services for a landowner, to whom they devoted themselves and, finally, natural disasters (fire, looting) that took place in the settlements.
